Status Yellow – Gale warning from Belfast Lough to Howth Head to Hook Head and on the Irish Sea

Met Eireann have issued a further weather advisory for wind this week.

As Ireland experiences more frequent and intense wind and storms, it’s crucial for property owners to be prepared and informed. Climate change has contributed to these weather patterns, making it essential for individuals and communities to adapt. Here’s some information and tips to help cope with the challenges posed by increased wind and storms:

  1. Stay Informed: Keep abreast of weather forecasts and warnings from reliable sources such as Met Éireann and local authorities. This allows you to anticipate severe weather events and take necessary precautions.
  2. Secure Outdoor Items: Strong winds can turn loose objects into dangerous projectiles. Secure outdoor furniture, garden tools, and other items that could be blown around or cause damage.
  3. Check Roofs and Gutters: Regularly inspect roofs and gutters for any damage or loose components that could become hazards during a storm. Repair or replace damaged areas promptly to prevent water leaks and structural issues.
  4. Trim Trees and Branches: Prune trees and trim overhanging branches to reduce the risk of them falling on buildings, vehicles, or power lines during high winds. This also helps maintain the health and stability of the trees.
  5. Prepare an Emergency Kit: Assemble an emergency kit containing essentials such as non-perishable food, water, medications, flashlights, batteries, first aid supplies, and important documents. Ensure all household members know its location and how to use its contents.
  6. Reinforce Windows and Doors: Strengthen windows and doors with storm shutters, reinforced glass, or plywood to minimize damage from flying debris and strong gusts of wind. Consider installing impact-resistant windows for added protection.
  7. Develop an Evacuation Plan: Create a comprehensive evacuation plan with designated meeting points and routes in case of severe weather emergencies. Practice the plan with your household members to ensure everyone knows what to do.
  8. Stay Indoors During Storms: When severe weather strikes, stay indoors and away from windows, doors, and exterior walls. Listen to local authorities for updates and follow their instructions regarding evacuation orders or sheltering in place.
  9. Prepare for Power Outages: Stock up on essential supplies such as torches, batteries, candles, and blankets to stay comfortable during power outages. Have a backup power source such as a generator or portable charger for important devices.
